Description Edward Foden was born 14 February 1913. He was educated at St Antony's Church of England School and served his apprenticeship at Mitchell's Shipyard and then in the Merchant Navy. He returned to the Tyne Shipyards working on the King George V and the Anson. He eventually opened a small office in Coronation Chambers, Pilgrim Street where he conducted his business, Foden Marine Devices.
By the age of 40 he had at least eighteen patents registered and many of his patents such as steel cargo hatches and lifeboat hatches have been used by ships around the world. E Foden died 8 June 1985.
