Tyne & Wear Archives Service is a member of CARN (the County Archive Research Network). Anyone wishing to use the Archives will require a valid readers' ticket.
Advance booking is essential for Tuesday evenings as we require prior notification of the archives you want access to. Booking is also advisable at any time for the use of microfilm readers. You can make a booking by email, phone, letter or while visiting us.
If you have any special needs please mention them when booking. We have one microfilm reader that provides electronic winding and additional space around it that may be pre-specified if required. We also have a volunteer mentor scheme that can provide extra help, if needed, to access the archives service.
In addition to the holdings listed on these pages, Tyne and Wear Archives Service has many resources which may be of value to researchers. A publication Sources for Family History at Tyne & Wear Archives Service is available free of charge (postage appropriate for an item weighing 85 grams appreciated).
